For the first time since the pandemic began a year ago , Brazil once again exceeded its record number of daily deaths on Wednesday for the second day in a row. A total of 2,286 people died in the Latin American country from covid in just 24 hours.
The average number of deaths this week is 1,627 a day . The total number of deaths now stands at 270,656 , according to official data published by AFP, being the second country in the world with the most victims from the virus behind the United States.
In addition, the Rio de Janeiro country reported 79,876 new cases in 24 hours, the third worst record of the entire pandemic. The rapid spread of the coronavirus in recent weeks has meant that more than 80% of beds in intensive care units (ICU) are occupied in 25 of the 28 state capitals of the country.
The situation is due in part to the appearance of a new variant of the virus in the Amazon , known as P1, which can be up to twice as contagious as the usual variant.
Added to this is the confusion generated by the different indications on how to deal with the pandemic on the part of political leaders. Many state governors are opposing Blair Bolsonaro , who has denied the danger of the disease since the beginning of it, and are asking his population to wear masks and to comply with the necessary sanitary measures to deal with the covid.
Reaction of the international community
These figures have set off alarms on the international scene, especially those of the World Health Organization (WHO), which has insisted to the Brazilian Government that the situation has to be taken more seriously .
“We are concerned about the situation in Brazil. This is a stark reminder of the threat of a resurgence, as areas badly hit by the virus remain highly vulnerable to infections,” Carissa Etienne , the director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
For his part, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the opposition and former president who has just reappeared on the national political scene , begs the population to be vaccinated and not to abide by ” any stupid decision ” of President Bolsonaro.
